  • Overview

Improve the quality of your strategic decision making

This practical and highly interactive three-day programme, which includes a day-long simulation, will help you improve the quality of your decision-making and that of your organisation. You will learn how the brain makes decisions, sources of bias, and how these influence the formulation of strategy. You will learn how to design the decision process to improve decision-making.

Who is it for?

You are an experienced manager or executive involved in strategic decision-making. You may provide input or support to the process, be involved in formulating and reviewing proposals, or be responsible for making the decision. You may be in the public or private sector.

Learning approach

A particular feature of Formulating Strategy is the use of video and role plays. A movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis is used to bring decision making to life, and the course finishes with a day-long simulation of a decision process in which participants can feel the pressures and strains inherent in making strategic decisions.

Programme Content

You will learn:

  • How the brain formulates strategy and makes decisions
  • The conditions under which biases can affect decision-making
  • How to safeguard the decision process to reduce the risk of poor decisions
  • How to frame and re-frame decisions
  • Practical tips on how to customise the decision process.

Programme Structure

Formulating Strategy is the last 3 days of our Strategic Decisions programme. If you also need support in designing your strategic plan, you can undertake our Strategy Tools module, which makes up the first 2 days of Strategic Decisions, or which can be taken at a separate time as a standalone course.

What makes this programme different?

  • Simple but powerful frameworks that help you take the learning from the programme and apply them back in your workplace
  • The use of films and role plays to create a memorable experience
  • The ideas on which the course is based are drawn from original research by Ashridge into decision-making, as captured in the book "Think Again, Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions and How to Keep it From Happening to You."
  • The calibre and experience the course tutor and your fellow participants.
