Middlesex University has a long and proud history as a provider of high-quality education in North London. Its roots date back to 1878 with the opening of St Katherine's College, and the highly acclaimed Hornsey School of Arts and Crafts in 1882. Following the Second World War, there was a huge need for teachers in the UK, and Trent Park College of Education opened in 1947. Middlesex still trains teachers at Trent Park today. In 1973, these Colleges joined together to form Middlesex Polytechnic which, in 1992, became Middlesex University by Royal Assent.

In 1996 Middlesex University was awarded the first of three Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education for its innovative provision of Work Based Learning, its Education Technology and more recently for the University's groundbreaking Flood Hazard Research Centre. The University was given the Queen's Award for Enterprise, in 2003, in recognition of Middlesex's pioneering global network of recruitment offices. The University deepened its international reach when it opened Middlesex University in Dubai in 2005 and five years later Middlesex University of Mauritius. For this development of its global activities Middlesex won its second Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2011. This year Middlesex will see campuses opening in India and Malta. This growing campus network brings benefits to students who wish to study abroad for part of their programme; but it also enables us to broaden our scope in terms of the experience we bring to internationalising our programmes.

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) found 77% of research at Middlesex University to be internationally recognised. This RAE success is the result of a significant investment in staff and facilities. Middlesex now attracts more research students than any other post-1992 university in London.

We fully understand the importance of the investment in postgraduate study. All our postgraduate programmes provide links with the professional world through accreditation by professional bodies like the British Psychological Society, Chartered Institute for Personnel Development, Media SkillSet, The British Law Society and many more. These links give students access to professional as well as academic qualifications and in some cases lead them to better postgraduate opportunities.

Internships and part-time placements are also a feature of Middlesex University's programmes. Placements can serve as a context for a Master's research thesis, providing the perfect opportunity for applied research projects. Feedback from placement employers helps us to align our programmes more closely to the needs of employers and the professions to ensure students have the best possible chance of reaching their goals.

We apply these contacts and experience in the University's supportive study environment where we offer a range of services that link to programmes of study. For example, there are language labs, careers counsellors and career-focused workshops, courses in study skills, English language enhancement, and more. Each service provides teaching or assistance with specific areas that will help students to achieve their maximum potential.

In recent years Middlesex has invested over £180 million to enhance the teaching, learning resources and social facilities on campus. Middlesex is particularly proud of its state-of-the-art centre for Art, Design and Media and the new teaching laboratories. The University is also proud of its diverse student population and the range of people who make up the Middlesex Community.

If you would like to invest in a visit and find out more about us, you can book a place on one of our Open Days, designed to give postgraduate students the best possible information about Middlesex University before they make the final choice.
